European Starling on Black Wood Perch

European Starling on Black Wood Perch

Regular price $299.00 Sale

European Starling Taxidermy Bird Measures around 9 inches tall x 7 deep x 4 wide, including the black wood perched it’s attached to. The starling can be removed from the perch if preferred. These are made to order, so each one is naturally slightly different from the next. The common starling, also known as the European starling, or in the British Isles just the starling, is a medium-sized passerine bird. The starling has glossy black plumage with a metallic sheen, which is speckled with white spots at some times of year, resembling stars in the night sky. The bill is black in winter and yellow in summer; young birds have browner plumage than the adults. It is a noisy bird, especially in communal roosts and other gregarious situations, with an unmusical but varied song. Starlings may be kept as pets, and their gift for mimicry has been noted in literature, including the works of William Shakespeare. In Henry IV, William Shakespeare had Hotspur declare, "The king forbade my tongue to speak of Mortimer. But I will find him when he is asleep, and in his ear I'll holler 'Mortimer!' Nay I'll have a starling be taught to speak nothing but Mortimer, and give it to him to keep his anger still in motion." European starlings were intentionally introduced into the United States in Central Park, New York in 1890 because those admiring the works of Shakespeare wanted to see all the birds mentioned in his creations represented in North America. About 100 starlings were introduced to the US via the park, and now the invasive species is one of the most abundant birds in North America with a population of approximately 200 million. Mozart had a pet common starling which could sing part of his Piano Concerto in G Major. He became very attached to the bird and arranged an elaborate funeral for it when it died three years later. You will receive one taxidermy European Starling with wings closed, standing on black wood perch. Ships USPS priority mail, tracked and insured. Free local pickup in Greenpoint, Brooklyn NY 11211.
